Self-published in 2012, The Afronauts is a beautifully low-key book comprising De Middel's staged photographs of astronauts in training, makeshift spacecraft and "African" landscapes – the actual location was the arid landscape and deserted industrial interiors around her home town, Alicante, and the afronauts are locals.
