The increasing prevalence and success of organo-fluorines have instigated enormous efforts over the past decades in developing methodologies for efficiently introducing fluorine into organic molecules, however the unique properties of fluorine make these chemical incorporations challenging, usually needing harsh synthetic conditions and giving rise to moderate chemo- or stereo- selectivity.
"Obviously the economics of global warming are different because the fossil fuel industry is worth a lot more in dollars than the companies making these chemicals," she said.
The researchers also found much higher levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are known mutagens, in particles at the polluted site, making these chemicals a leading suspect.Similar mutations have been reported in people exposed to radiation.
