Some states are now thinking about making their welfare recipients take drug tests, supposedly to make sure that tax dollars aren't going toward getting high, but that same money they think they'll be saving will get wasted on overpriced, ineffective tests.
The claim, based on bad research by a conservative think tank, proved false, and the entire testing regime was laughed out of court -- but not before Republicans in other states cited Florida's experience when proposing laws to make their own welfare applicants pee in cups.
The One Nation leader has launched a proposal suggesting that people on the Work for the Dole scheme be made to earn their welfare by collecting cane toads, NewsCorp reports.
The only answer is for people to (gasp) use their common sense, make their own decisions about their welfare, and protect themselves and those in their immediate care.
For instance, inspectors have been told to make their review of animal welfare more random, so workers cannot prepare for their arrival by hiding evidence of abuse, and to pay special attention to plants where older or potentially sick animals are slaughtered, like veal and dairy cow slaughterhouses.
Mr. Giuliani added, "There are people who make their money out of the welfare industry," but as the lives of the homeless improve, their advocates "have less money, less budget, less authority, and you put them on television less, which might actually be the thing that motivates them more than anything else".
One could add that the very inequality that distances the rich from ordinary concerns gives them increased power, and so makes their anti-welfare-state views far more influential.
"Players are definitely open to discussing a new global season but what we develop has to work with the club game in order to reduce conflict, deal with player release issues and make sure their welfare is looked after.
The Greens are making their opposition to government welfare cuts - including housing benefit caps dubbed by critics as the "bedroom tax" - a central theme of their campaign as well as emphasising their support for a "living wage" for low-paid workers and 20mph speeds limits on more roads.
And they ignored the central feature of the welfare reform that Washington undertook in the 1990s, which was to continue providing aid to parents as they made their way from the welfare rolls to payrolls.
