Mr. Tiede's book turns out to be everything he accuses self-help books of being and worse: it's self-important, sanctimonious and poorly written; it uses random anecdotes to make absurd generalizations; and it devolves into a loony editorial rant about everything from marijuana to United States foreign policy in the Balkans.
