Efforts have been made in recent decades to explain the metabolic enzymes controlling the sugar/acid balance during grape development, a major quality trait of grape berry flesh.
The major fruit quality traits and skin color parameters of the two cultivars were also measured, showing statistically significant differences only for soluble solids content (Additional File 2).
Major fruit quality traits of interest for both the fresh market and processing tomatoes include fruit size, shape, total solids, colour, firmness, ripening, pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids content and dry matter.
These results indicated that solar radiation and daily temperature range may have an interaction, and play a major role in effecting quality traits.
The major genes related to quality traits includes waxy gene for amylose content (AC) [ 7], alk gene for gelatinization temperature (GT) [ 8], fgr for fragrance [ 9, 10], GS3 for grain size and grain weight [ 11] and chalk5 for chalkiness [ 12].
Fruit quality traits are major targets in breeding programs and as such a better understanding of the genetic basis controlling these traits is a crucial step towards the implementation of MAS for fruit quality.
This has been made possible by combining stringent phenotypic selection with a major focus on agronomic and quality traits for selection of the plants and MAS for gene(s) of interest (Gopalakrishnan et al. 2008).
Other genetic studies have found major-effect QTLs for eating quality traits by using segregating populations derived from crosses with Koshihikari (Takeuchi et al. 2007, Kobayashi et al. 2008, Wada et al. 2008).
Stem fiber content does not seem associated with qualitative or quantitative plant characteristics in flax germplasm [ 4] indicating that there are no major biological restrictions for pyramiding agronomic and seed quality traits with high fiber content.
