Molecular phylogenetics has rapidly established the evolutionary positions of most major mammal groups [1, 2], yet analyses have repeatedly failed to agree on that of bats (order Chiroptera) [3 6].
Marsupials diverged from eutherian mammals about 148 million years ago (MYA), and mammalian Subclass Theria that contains these groups diverged from monotremes (Subclass Prototheria) about 166 MYA [ 20], so comparisons between these major mammal groups provide depth for evolutionary comparisons.
Thus, a clock with a rate constant of 3 × 10.-9 transisions/site/year is maximally accurate when dating events that occurred 116 million years ago (Ma), a time in the mid Cretaceous before the major mammal orders diverged, but after placental mammals diverged from marsupials and monotremes.
Here, using three independent datasets we showed positive relationships between the time since domestication of the major domesticated mammals and the total number of parasites or infectious diseases they shared with humans.
The oldest hystricognaths from Egypt, ∼37 Ma Protophiomys aegyptensis and Waslamys attiai, were recently described by Sallam et al.
