Their oxygen transporter haemocyanin plays a major role in cold tolerance and accordingly has undergone functional modifications to sustain oxygen release at sub-zero temperatures.
From the putative functions of these 89 genes, we found 6 major functional groups: transcription factors (13 genes), phytohormone metabolism, signaling and response (6 genes), cell wall-degrading or modification (5 genes), defense function (8 genes), lipid metabolism (6 genes) and transporter/channel proteins (6 genes) (Table 1).
Other highly abundant proteins include intracellular transport proteins, ribosomal proteins, and proteins involved in major functional categories such as RNA processing, transcription and translation initiation and regulation, post-traslational modification and energy production.
