The present article aims to provide definitions of the common and differential features of checklists for the main study designs.

We defined the scope of the recommendations to cover three main study designs: cohort, case control and cross-sectional studies.

The main study designs in observational studies are cohort, case control, and cross-sectional studies, all of which have intrinsic strengths and limitations.

Its guidelines provide a user-friendly checklist of 22 items to be reported in epidemiological studies, with items specific to the three main study designs: cohort studies, case-control studies and cross-sectional studies.

Concretely, we introduce how to classify our participants, how to measure disease frequency, how to assess if an exposure is associated to an outcome and the main study designs that are used in epidemiology.
