For example, HIV-positive African American MSMW were less likely to have unprotected sex with male main partners and female main partners compared to HIV-negative or HIV-unknown MSMW, though they were just as likely to have unprotected sex with non-main male and non-main female partners as HIV-negative or HIV-unknown MSMW (Lauby et al., 2008).
Some of the contextual factors that affect condom use are homelessness [ 25, 27– 30], a woman's knowledge of her own HIV status [ 31, 32], casual versus chronic substance use [ 33– 39], and sex with a main or close partner compared with another type of partner, such as an unknown partner or a partner with whom sex is exchanged for drugs or money [ 5, 11, 14].
Baseline reports of consistent condom use during vaginal/anal sex were higher with casual partners compared to a main partner (36 vs. 14%, respectively).
