Maf the Dog, like Lolita, like The Great Gatsby, is a threnody for lost innocence.
According to reports, author Andrew O'Hagan told the Edinburgh Book Festival that the star would fill Marilyn's shoes in a film version of his novel, The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog, opposite George Clooney as Frank Sinatra.
It is clear that Maf is an urbane dog of unparalleled lineage - given to Monroe by Frank Sinatra, given to Sinatra by Natalie Wood's mother, given to her by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, and that his task is to reappraise the last two years of Monroe's life from a dog's-eye view.
Shaykh Noor Siddiqi, another MAF representative, said: "The actions of the UK media in not publishing the cartoons is highly appreciated by British Muslims and we hope that this kind of self-restraint and mutual respect will ultimately lead to a harmonious society".
Maf was apparently the last to see her alive on 5 August 1962, but O'Hagan's story ends before that point, so ducking out of a possibly fruitful fictive opportunity.
Shaykh Tauqir Ishaq, a senior spokesman for the MAF, said "perpetual mistakes by extremists, either by cold-blooded killers or uncivilised expressionists, cannot be the way forward for a civilised society.
The idea came to O'Hagan during a New York auction when six Polaroid pictures of Maf turned up for sale.
