Its peaks average 3,000 feet (900 m) in elevation.
The region comprises a large depression some 1,500 1,700 feet (450 520 m) in elevation.
It is traversed by several higher quartzite ridges including the Soonwald, Idarwald, and Hochwald, their highest peak, the Erbeskopf, reaching 2,684 ft (818 m) in elevation.
A rocky island, it reaches 2,054 feet (626 m) in elevation at Mount Sveti Nikola and is separated from the island of Brač by a narrow channel.

Ecologically, B. culasiensis occurs in lowland forest at ca. 50 m in elevation, whereas B. rubrifolia grows in montane forest at ca. 1000 m in elevation.
Wild Sichuan takins generally are found on forested slopes at 1500 4000 m in elevation.
