Overexpression of Nef elicits an apoptotic response in CD4+ T lymphocytes via disruption of lysosomal integrity, thus, the progressive and massive destruction of CD4+ T lymphocytes characteristic of HIV-1-related disease may in part be due to Nef-induced LMP.
