Before reading Collodi, when I was familiar only with Walt Disney's version of the story, I had the idea that the moral of Pinocchio's story was "The truth sets you free": as long as you are lying, you are dancing on the strings of others, but once you are brave enough to speak your mind — rather than worry about what others would have you say and do — you can be authentic; you can be a real boy.
