Other non-lunar explanations include the viewing of Earth-orbiting satellites and meteors or observational error.
"It's a solid refutation of [the lunar] explanation," says Robin Baird, a marine biologist with the Cascadia Research Collective, a nonprofit research organization in Olympia, Washington.
Explanations for the transient lunar phenomena fall in four classes: outgassing, impact events, electrostatic phenomena, and unfavorable observation conditions.
Other findings from lunar effects research defy a clear-cut explanation, such as the effect on stock market prices.

But Zuber and a team of colleagues at MIT, the Colorado School of Mines, and NASA say they've found a new explanation for the mysterious feature on the lunar surface: ancient volcanic eruptions.
Alternative explanations to a dynamo-generated global field for the lunar magnetic record suggest that at least part of the remanent magnetization was acquired from plasma clouds that had been generated by impacts antipodal to the magnetic anomaly (Hide 1972; Hood and Vickery 1984; Hood and Huang 1991; Hood et al. 2001).
Stegman et al. (2003) investigated this possibility for running a lunar dynamo, and Ziegler and Stegman (2013) similarly sought an explanation for Earth's early magnetic field by this mechanism.
"The only explanation we could come up with is that maybe there is a lunar clock in the brain, as found in other species like fish and other marine animals," he said.
