End-to-side anastomoses are used when a smaller proximal lumen is connected to a larger one such as after standard (Fig. 4) or extended right colectomy: in these cases WE-MDCT shows absence of the right colon from the terminal ileum through the hepatic flexure or transverse colon, respectively.
The ports of each lumen were connected to transducers (HP1290C; Hewlett-Packard, Waltham, MA, USA) and pressure modules (M1006A; Hewlett-Packard) were connected to a Hewlett-Packard monitor (M1176-A; Hewlett-Packard).
Both ventral vessels are tightly organized along their entire lengths, and their lumens are connected distally, forming a complete capillary loop.
Interestingly, lumen obliteration was connected with increased expression of factors associated with EMT such as β6 integrin, IL-13 and TGFβ.
Inclusion criteria were age >18 years, expected ICU length of stay of ≥ 3 days, an Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II ≥ 10, hyperglycemia >150 mg/dl at the time of admission and need for a central venous catheter, one lumen of which was connected to Optiscanner® (Optiscan, Hayward, CA), a validated mid-infrared spectroscopy method of glucose measurement.
One lumen of the catheter was connected to a peristaltic pump (Gilson Minipuls 3) and used to perfuse the descending aorta in a retrograde direction with perfusate at room temperature (20 °C) and equilibrated with 40 Torr PCO2 in O2 (central perfusion).
The balloon lumen of the catheter was connected with a three-way stopcock for volume manipulation of the balloon, and the other two ways were connected to a 1-ml gas-tight syringe (LOT JM00B25, Runze fluid control equipment, C.O., Ltd., Nanjing, China) and a pressure transducer.
To unfold the intrarectal bag, one lumen of the polyvinyl tube was connected to a pressure transducer of the barostat device and the bag was slowly inflated through the other lumen of the tube with 200 ml of air under controlled pressure (<20 mmHg).
A reconstructed frontal plane CT scan showed that the lumen of the cystic lesion was connected to that of the LMB through a thin tunnel, and that, many tiny air spaces extended from the LMB wall (Fig. 1c, d).
The proximal lumen was always dedicated to the vasoactive drug infusion, and a low dead volume extension line with three-way stopcock (PES3101, Biocath®, Lissieu, France) was connected to this lumen in order to perform the CNIP.
