The idiom "low down" is correct and usable in written English
It is generally used to refer to a person or thing of low social standing (e.g. a low-down criminal) or to mean a situation that is unfair or deceptive (e.g. giving me the low down on what really happened). For example: The boss gave us the low down on the new project we had to start working on.
