"There are a lot of technologies, services and treatments that have not been unequivocally shown to improve health outcomes in a definitive manner," Dr. Straube said.

But this phenomenon, known as the network effect, is common to a lot of technologies, and VoicePay is already being evaluated by several of the banks and credit-card companies whose collaboration will be needed to encourage the network's growth.The other catch is that it still requires product codes to be keyed in, at least when the customer is buying directly over the phone.
