According to the Global Forest Watch, Nsanje lost 1,715 hectares out of 30,000 hectares of tree cover from 2001 to 2012.
Severe damage also occurred in the agricultural sector; 400 hectares of citrus was lost, 80 hectares of greenhouses was destroyed.
In 2012, she calculates, Indonesia lost 840,000 hectares of its primary forest, compared to 460,000 hectares in Brazil, despite its forest being roughly a quarter the size of the Amazon.
Their findings showed that overall the world lost 18m hectares of forest in 2013.
In just one year, 2005-06, it lost 286,146 hectares – 11% of forest cover.
Between 2001 and 2012, the region lost 36m hectares of forest and grassland to agricultural expansion.
"Nicaragua has lost 250 hectares of wetlands that we considered to be ours," said Nicaragua's ambassador to the Netherlands, Carlos Argüello Gómez.
"We lost five hectares, around $2,500 of income, and got no compensation, not even one riel".
He said 200 threatened animals – including the greater bilby and northern quoll – and plants lost 211,820 hectares of habitat following the reduction in tree-clearing controls.
In the 25 years since the end of communism, Romania has lost 370,000 hectares of forest – including some of Europe's last areas of virgin forest – to illegal deforestation, according to a report last year by the Romanian Court of Accounts.
