"People are looking for instant estates," said Greg Marett, a landscape designer for the Laurel Group in Huntington, N.Y., who specializes in classical shaped pools surrounded by brick and bluestone terraces with a penchant for fancy scrollwork on wrought-iron entrance gates.

"No one looking for real estate in New York City — not a soul — turns on reality TV to find their property," he said.
