The performance of a domestic appliance for wood logs combustion is a function of several variables, such as the geometric design of the appliance and its operating parameters.
However, controlling wood logs' combustion remains challenging, and the emission levels of unburnt compounds are generally higher than for e.g. wood pellet stoves.
These conditions do not occur during log wood combustion, especially in small household systems, where the discretion of the user (e.g., frequency of stove maintenance operations and choice of wood type) is very high.
We have started the log wood combustion tests with relatively smokeless lighter cubes.
For log wood combustion average odor ranged from 536 OU m−3 for hornbeam to 5217 OU m−3 for fir, indicating a considerable influence of the wood type on odor concentration.
Synthetic log burning produced elevated levels of almost all measured PAHs compared to the combustion of wood, but not higher levels of the other pollutants measured [ 39].
The obtained results show that the combustion of logs containing SCG leads to better yield of combustion.
The odor thresholds for briquettes, wood logs and garden biomass combustion range between 536 and 18,963 OU m−3 (Table 3s).
Further, the results showed the potential positive influence by conversion from wood log to low emission pellet combustion.
