The locations, detectives say, were probably chosen because they allowed the caller to blend into crowds, so that if investigators pinpointed his location from the cellphone's signal, they would be unable to pick him out of the crowd using any nearby surveillance cameras, one of the people said.
"It appears that the victim was dumped at the location," said Detective Carolyn Chew, a police spokeswoman.
"Crime novels offer various delights, including atmospheric locations, charismatic detectives, courageous acts, vicious deeds and mysterious events.
The Zazi case, Mr. Silber said, was the largest surveillance effort the Police Department ever mounted in a terrorism investigation, and the unit's analysts worked around the clock at covert locations, debriefing detectives as they came in off the street, then analyzing and sharing the information with the next shift before it went into the field.
Uncanny reasoning takes the form of quiet observations where you'll pick out clues or evidence from characters or locations, while the detective's penchant for disguises offers a wardrobe of outfits required for certain cases.
After a search at one location proved unsuccessful, detectives found Kane in Joshua Tree.
Some locations lend themselves to symmetry, such as the already symmetrical art gallery amd the architectural facades, but the way Sherlock's team of cinematographers capture locations like the detective's cluttered apartment is impressive.
"All the individuals who were at that location were arrested," said Detective Sgt. Anthony Repalone, a spokesman for the Nassau County Police Department.
Just pinpointing the leak's location often takes persistence, detective work and a fair amount of luck.
"We've been into these location numerous times," said Detective John J. Loughery, in Roanoke, "and only on one occasion did we see a single person accessing the Internet".
