For proteins with multiple cellular localizations, the literature (PubMed, NCBI) was the annotation source for finding other secreted and cell surface proteins.
Empirical localization data from literature were collated for annotated proteins.
We next looked for a published report of localization in the literature for the remaining 126 proteins.
To achieve this, we used the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID) focusing on the "Uniprot Tissue" list, a curated list of localization based on literature mining.

In the environmental sustainability literature, localization is framed as building community resilience to peak petroleum and mitigating climate change by 1) increasing local production of goods and services, and 2) decreasing reliance on inputs from outside the local area.
When not found in the literature, localization can be inferred using ab initio predictions from enzyme sequences (Schneider & Fechner, 2004), or determined experimentally, for example using fluorescence microscopy (Meyer & Dworkin, 2007).
A large body of location estimation literature already exists, much of it centered on self-localization.
