Although this study has several limitations, the results form a starting point for future consideration and research by demonstrating how lack of local language proficiency may be a potential source of difficulty during disasters.
In the case of Spain, an argument in favor of this possibility is that a large proportion of immigrants (about 50%%) come from Latin America (Fig. 3), and that their local language proficiency might help them to be especially fast in catching up with native students.
Additionally, we found a positive association between local language proficiency and academic self-perception.
Figure 1 shows the joint association between psychological distress and low peer support on poor academic self-perception, adjusted by local language proficiency and family support.
Both psychological distress and low peer social support were negatively associated with poor academic self-perception, adjusted for local language proficiency and social support from family.
