An agent (listener) changes his currently held opinion only when the adoption probability of the majority group is larger than a randomly chosen threshold value and the adoption probabilities of the other neighbouring ideologies as well (Fig. 2).
In fact, most listen to just two and a half stations a week (that is, two main stations and one for specific programmes or presenters); a third of listeners never change the station while driving to or from work.
Clergy used this idea to encourage their listeners to change, by becoming more pious, less accepting of religious difference, or taking whatever other actions they thought in need of amendment.
However, their impressions were diverted as listeners helped change their minds; early rotation of the single proved successful, showing it was as popular with post-collegiate listeners as with teens the song even went to No. 1 in the U.S. mainstream.
Note, however, that there was uncertainty about the location of the target talker in this experiment so that the slow improvement occurring when the target location remained the same for some time may also be due to the fact that the listeners gradually changed their listening strategy to one optimized to a nonmoving talker.
When the great Radio 1 dinosaur cull of 1993 took place, the Hairy Cornflake was appalled, informing his listeners that "changes are being made here which go against my principles, and I just cannot agree with them".
Phase controls allow the listener to change the arrival time of the subwoofer sound waves relative to the same frequencies from the main speakers (i.e., at and around the crossover point to the subwoofer).
As James Munro, chief executive of Patient Opinion, said: "Listening is the beating heart of healthcare" and in the act of listening "both speaker and listener are changed".
For listeners too, the change may be dramatic.
Listeners can't change the direction of the story line.
