"But now the Scottish Open is at Aberdeen, it's a true links test again.
It certainly looks the part and is supposed to be a very authentic links test, reinforced by the possibility of some good old British weather.
"I missed out on Castle Stuart [home venue for recent Scottish Opens] because I didn't really feel like it provided a true links test," said McIlroy.
"I really believe coming here and playing the week before the Open, playing in a great links test like this, is a real asset," he said.
"I think Royal Aberdeen is a great links test and a great way to get ready for the British Open, but so was Castle Stuart.
Last week, Illinois enacted legislation that makes it easier to fire teachers and links test scores to evaluations.
