Geotechnical investigations involving sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, moisture content, organic content and consolidation test were carried out for soil classification and competence test.
The samples were also freeze-dried to determine moisture content.
To limit the moisture content and to prevent the polysaccharide degradation and/or depolymerization, the dissolution step was performed for 4 h at 90°C, that is, a temperature higher than the melting point of the IL, and under reduced pressure (100 mbar).
In basalt-derived soils, the water available for ponderosa pine use becomes limited at a moisture content of 10% (Heidmann and King [1992]), whereas in coarse-textured soils, developed from sedimentary rocks, water is not limiting to ponderosa pines until it reaches 1.5% moisture content.
