Ad libitum fed pigs gained more weight, but had poorer feed conversion than limit fed pigs.
In experiment 1, 36 crossbred (Long White × Large White) barrows were used in a 2 × 3 factorial design to determine the effects of food intake (ad libitum versus limit fed) and tryptophan level (0.12%, 0.19% and 0.26%) on growth performance as well as ghrelin expression, plasma insulin, ghrelin and leptin levels.
Gilts were individually housed in gestation stalls and limit fed (HE: 10,144 Kcal/day vs. NE: 6,721 Kcal/day) the same diet throughout pregnancy with ad libitum access to water.
Results demonstrate that up to 50% of diet can be fed in limit-fed rations as DDGS, compared with 30 or 40%, to peripubertal dairy heifers without negative consequences to first-lactation performance during the first 3 mo.

Both treatments were offered following consumption of a limit-fed, nutrient-dense total mixed ration fed at 2.05% of body weight.
Forty-eight crossbred steers (initial BW = 273 ± 6.9 kg; Exp. 2) were individually fed 4 diets: 1) a control diet; 2) a control + PHY diet; 3) diet 1 limit fed to 85% of ad libitum intake (limit-fed diet); and 4) the limit-fed diet + PHY.
This study showed that the response of chewing or ruminating activity alone seemed to be insufficient to assess the dietary physical effectiveness or fiber adequacy in limit-fed dairy cows when high-concentrate diets were fed separately.
