It is known that most part (>70%) of volcanic ash is heat-resistant soda-lime aluminosilicate glass.
It is speculated that the sintering temperature was not high enough for the iron (II,III) to cause such a redox reaction, since the main component of the volcanic ash was "heat-resistant" soda-lime aluminosilicate.
Main component of volcanic ash and that of coal ash are known to be heat-resistant soda-lime "aluminosilicate" glass composed of alkali oxides, alkaline earth oxides, Al2O3, SiO2, etc.
The doublet was assigned to octahedral FeII species that occupied the so-called interstitial sites of the 3D-network of soda-lime aluminosilicate glass which was composed of distorted SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra.
Since volcanic ash and fly ash were composed of heat-resistant soda-lime aluminosilicates, sintering was examined in a temperature range of 950 1100 °C to prepare as many pores as possible in the molten glassy phase.

Analyses by DSC, XRD and SEM of samples containing 25% Ca(OH 2 and 75% of ground glass demonstrated that this admixture induced the formation of calcium silicate and calcium aluminosilicate hydrates at the expense of lime as well as hydrated sodium carbonate.
Other silica-based glasses are the aluminosilicate glasses, which are intermediate between vitreous silica and the more common soda-lime-silica glasses in thermal properties as well as cost; glass fibres such as E glass and S glass, used in fibre-reinforced plastics and in thermal-insulation wool; and optical glasses containing a multitude of additional major constituents.
The alkali feldspars may be regarded as mixtures of sodium aluminosilicate (NaAlSi3O8) and potassium aluminosilicate (KAlSi3O8).
