This is probably the first detective novel I've read in thirty years, and despite the fact that I didn't find any of its well-drawn characters particularly likeable, I really enjoyed it.
After a few observations on the book's slow pace felixfel wrote: "None of which would have mattered if the main narrating character had been likeable – I could read 1,200 pages' worth of Bertie Wooster's thoughts on the weather – but she is absolutely insufferable and more bitter and irritating than those grapes with seeds in them.
And Waltz was so completely likeable, I'd love to see a prequel featuring Dr. King Schultz's transition from dentist to bounty hunter.

I bring up Simon the Likeable because I tend to think of him every time I visit the Bellwether, a newish American bistro in Studio City.
