Jane Martinson: Making users sign in to watch catch-up shows will bring in vital revenue for the BBC, but it may make the corporation seem more like pay-TV rivals such as Sky The Guardian Netflix in talks with BBC over new-look Top Gear.
There's also a customer base who still likes their pay TV subscription, of course, even if those dynamics are changing.
This would also include a cloud-based DVR and a way to watch past episodes on demand, like many pay TV providers already allow for today.
You can't skip the commercials, like some DVRs allow for (including Dish's own with AutoHop), and you can't record favorite programs to watch later, like most pay TV subscribers can today with their DVRs.
In other words, Amazon is taking the long-term view that cord cutters and cord nevers will decided against the live TV bundles that are too much like traditional pay TV and will choose to more specifically customize their channel preferences instead of buying a bloated TV package.
That means it's more like a traditional pay TV provider, as users will be directed to apps — like ABC, HBO Go, NBC, ESPN, Starz or HGTV, for example — when they want to watch TV on the go.
"The tendency of these customers to take up other services like digital or pay TV is low," says an analyst close to the company.
Like some other pay TV providers before it, DirecTV has taken the unusual approach of telling subscribers that they can easily access a lot of the shows that have gone dark on the web.
But lately, it's begun courting app makers from traditional content producers, securing apps for premium networks like HBO and working with pay TV providers like DISH to bring their content over-the-top.
