The results show that the process of thermal decomposition of NFCs underwent complex processes from the initial light discolouration to blackening and in some cases blistering, and from the decomposition of polyester to fibres to delamination of lamina with the dictated influence of natural fibre and interface structure.
It can be seen that for the well processed photographs, for all paper types no clear change was observed on the recto at 50 °C and 70% RH whilst light discolouration was observed on the versos after degradation.
The toxicity was graded as follows: T0=no lesions (normal appearance); T1=uniform light discolouration and firmness; T2=white plaques visible covering ∼5% of the liver surface; T3=white plaques covering ∼10% of liver surface; T4=white plaques covering up to ∼30% of liver surface; and T5=white plaques covering ⩾30% of liver surface.

The black discolouration of red lead due to light exposure was initially attributed to the formation of black PbO2, but this compound is not stable to light [1], and it was rarely positively identified [93, 120, 238], while mixed oxides are also hypothesized [59].
That meant it did not preserve as well and so was overlooked for many years until investigations with UV light showed that one was present, albeit as a rather faint discolouration and depression on the specimen, but of the right size, shape and position to be a furcula.
The current-year foliage under +CO2 showed a lighter green colour (Fig. 6A, B and E) and this discolouration was increased on the acidic versus calcareous soil (−7 and −4 %) whereas the +ND led to darker green hue on acidic soil (+11 and + 2 %, significant ND × soil interaction; Fig. 6C and D, Table 2).
Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity was investigated through the discolourations of red wine and red beet stains under two types of light sources, i.e. direct day light and artificial UV light, by means of a spectrophotometry.
