We confirmed that the rainforests of West and Central Africa would have been broadly comparable prior to deforestation by comparing levels of tree cover in rainforest protected areas from both regions.
Consistent with the high levels of deforestation in West Africa, rainforest populations from West and Central Africa are morphologically more divergent today than they were historically (Figure 4).
