Tests on the remains showed the presence of ethylene glycol, a toxic compound used as automotive antifreeze, the authorities said; an autopsy of Mr. Castor at the time of his death also revealed the presence of a fatal level of the compound — which has no odor and has a sweet taste, allowing it to be mixed undetected into beverages like coffee or iced tea.
Levels of brain CoQ, which in humans is predominantly CoQ10 and in rodents CoQ9, are affected by nutrition [40], thus the concentrations we observed in the brain may reflect the physiologically normal level of the compound when nutrition is adequate.
Several in vivo studies demonstrated that the level of the compound needed to prevent infection in vivo is several orders of magnitude higher than that seen in vitro [65], [74] [76].

"Diets with low levels of the compounds show promising effects in mice and should be further explored as a way to prevent dementia through changes in diet," he added.
