Genetic variations affecting the level of boar taint have previously been demonstrated in many breeds.
A classical genome scan, however somewhat sparse, was done to identify QTL regions and in addition, a haplotype analysis to confirm the QTL association as well as identify haplotypes to reduce the level of boar taint.
Some of the candidate genes that are likely to have an impact on the level of boar taint have been summarised by Moe et al. (2009) [ 37] who performed an association study of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in the candidate genes.

These preliminary results demonstrated the potential of the electronic nose to detect high and low levels of boar taint, independently of the taint-related compound, and therefore to sort-out boar tainted carcasses.
Therefore to identify genomic regions simultaneously affecting levels of boar taint and fertility related compounds, the sex hormones 17β-estradiol (one of the main estrogens), estrone sulphate (the reservoir for the active compound of 17β-estradiol) and testosterone (essential to maintain spermatogenesis and male fertility) [reviewed by 9] were included.
The libido level of each boar was a mean value from three continual evaluations during the training period.
The results presented in this study showed that active immunization against GnRH with Improvac suppressed reproductive function in adult male pigs: evidence by decreased levels of testosterone, boar libido, volume of ejaculate and total number of normal spermatozoa in ejaculate in the immunocastrated AI boars.
The ultimate objective is to identify haplotypes that can be used directly in a marker assisted selection (MAS) strategy to breed for preferred levels of the boar taint traits.
Though the melatonin levels of the boars over all were significantly higher than the plasma concentrations of the adult females, there was no sex difference in the extent of the night-time melatonin increase.
The results of our studies showed that the mean of boar libido level after first vaccination of Improvac increased by two points in the 10-point scoring scale.
One obstacle to this comparison was the low level of gene annotation in boar or homogeneity of genes annotation between species.
