Present obstetric performance where parity (low versus high, P = 0.07); referral to hospital (Mulago versus other centres, P = 0.60); birth weight (low versus normal, P = 0.17); level of delivery attendant (P = 0.32) were not significantly associated with maternal mortality (results not shown).
Some of these challenges may include a lack of human resources, especially the technical specialists; an unequal distribution of health facilities in urban and rural areas; ensuring a regular supply of drugs and consumables in health facilities; poor quality of referral services; and low competence levels of birth attendants at providing emergency obstetric care (27, 34, 35).
Compared to the required level of training for birth attendants in most developed countries, which generally ranges from three to more than 10 years post high school, this is a very low level of training.
Assessing HBAs' demographic data, their skills in reading and the use of numbers, level of training, and birth attendants' relationship with other health services could be important in defining their potential role in the care of women and infants, and for developing the best strategies to improve their practices.
