The increase in the number of papers was predominant in the "ecology" subject category and, to a lesser extent, in the "biodiversity conservation" and "environmental sciences" subject categories [2], [9] [17] (Fig. 1).
Equivocal support also emerges for the result of [2], [3] that extinction intensity (and with a lesser significance origination and total biodiversity) has also been fluctuating on a roughly 26 30 Myr time scale.
At the landscape scale, matrix composition and geographic connectivity between wastelands influence the biodiversity of wastelands, although to a lesser extent than the local features.
Within the bathymetric range of 200 1,000 m, approximately 650 species belonging to the Eukarya domain have been encountered, and Megafauna and Nematoda contributed almost equally to total biodiversity, while Foraminifera and Macrofauna contributed to a lesser extent (Figure 5).
SEM shows that total biodiversity is positively determined by forest cover and, to a lesser extent, by HANPP, and that both factors are negatively associated with each other.
To a lesser extent, but no less hotly contested by those in the field, are logging, biodiversity and threatened species.
Sampling effort has clearly been best for shallow, nearshore waters, especially along the southern Caribbean coasts (Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela), off Mexico, in Puerto Rico, and in some of the Lesser Antilles (Figures 2 and 8). Figure 8 shows that the areas with the highest known biodiversity in the region are in Belize and central Colombia.
