This week, amongst a number of changes, we are rolling out a significant addition to the site navigation: a persistent or "sticky" navigation bar across the entire site, designed to help users find their way around theguardian.com with more speed (and less scrolling).
Despite the various approaches by designers, news sites are starting to adopt common features: navigation bars on the left, more photos, less scrolling to see what's on the page.
The pictures were pretty, but it was the text that mattered, and now users can read a lot more posts in the same amount of time because they're stacked tighter with less scrolling necessary.
We then opted for a solution that displays card variations with different components to help create a better sense of hierarchy, a more condensed and less monotonous news feed that displays more news with less scrolling and, consequently, a more efficient and better experience.

One finger, wheel-less scrolling is odd in that it adds momentum (you can turn it off) that will spin you past your desired point with an errant flick of your finger.
