In this study, we obtained the optimized intensity and focal area of incident light in a simple condenser lens-based solar concentrator by adjusting the focal length of light pathways for a reference DSSC with a T25 SL.
The number of pull-move transitions (length of unfolding pathways) differs only slightly for the sixteen benchmark problems and ranges from 27 to 31 for both types of benchmarks.
Differences in the length of the pathways between substrate (in this case, glucose and acetate) and the storage compound synthesized may suggest differences between metabolic optimality for the different compounds with respect to the mixture of storage compounds accumulated.
However, in the absence of protein data, the interpretation of differences in mRNA expression levels has to be taken with caution as their impact on gene product quantities also depends on the length of regulatory pathways, sex chromosome age, and selection strength (Oliver 2007; Vicoso and Charlesworth 2009; Hall and Wayne 2013).
These values were further multiplied by the mean length of the pathways connecting each seed with each target voxel [Beckmann et al., 2009; Eickhoff et al., 2010; Tomassini et al., 2007] to ensure that the results of tractography, and the following calculation of similarity between connectivity maps, were not biased toward nearby connections due to the mere anatomical proximity.
Specifically, (1) we corrected the count of the samples in each target voxel by the mean length of the pathways connecting each seed with each target voxel to ensure that the results of tractography would have not been biased toward anatomically close target voxels.
The motivation for using a random walk procedure as opposed to simpler distance measures like the shortest path distance is that by accounting both for the number and length of multiple pathways interconnecting two nodes, multi-facet relationships between them can be captured.
A single pathway was chosen from this pool on the basis of minimizing the length of the pathway, minimizing the number of unknown enzymatic steps, and predicting the thermodynamic likelihood of each reaction.
Estimated gains and losses of compounds in relation to length of metabolic pathway (Fig. 3a) and the role of dietary redundancy in sustaining elongation of metabolic pathways (Fig. 3b) both predict much more frequently occupied dietary nodes and limited diversification around these nodes.
The length of total pathway was measured over seven different temporal length scales (step lengths), ranging from one day to one week, and a seasonal mean was calculated.
