In several organisms, the length of conversion tracts has been shown to decrease exponentially with increasing distance from the sites of meiotic double-strand breaks.
In these cases, analysis of GC variation could provide some information on the parameters of meiotic recombination, like the mean length of conversion tracts, and capture some characteristics of the history of meiotic recombination (hence sexuality) of a given lineage.
This may reflect a decrease in the physical length of conversion tracts, which could in turn be due to limiting levels of factors necessary to promote gene conversion at the elevated rates dictated by tethered VP16 or HIRA.
Applying this model to the experimental observations obtained by Mancera et al., who found a median value of 2 kilobases (kb) for the total length of conversion
The use of heteroalleles to monitor the frequency of conversion and the length of conversion tracts has a substantial limitation.
Unlike meiotic recombination, which occurs at nonrandom positions, the mitotic crossovers were evenly distributed and the median length of conversion tracts was ∼12 kb, much longer than meiotic conversion tracts (Lee et al. 2009).

The median lengths of conversion tracts associated and unassociated with crossovers were 18.4 kb (10.8 25.3) and 8.4 kb (2.6 13.3), respectively.
The median length of all UV-induced conversion tracts was 9.2 kb (6.5 10.3), whereas the median lengths of conversion tracts associated and unassociated with crossovers were 10.3 (7.0–18.9) and 7.5 (4.5–10.2) kb, respectively.
The lengths of conversion tracts in such strains were estimated by averaging the distance between the heterozygous sites and the homozygous sites and adding the size of the inserted URA3 gene (∼1.1 kb).
Alternative models of recombination in which the lengths of conversion tracts are determined by break-induced replication or oversynthesis during strand invasion are proposed to account for these observations.
Unexpectedly, however, the lengths of conversion tracts that were unassociated with crossovers were longer in the exo1 strain than in the wild-type strain (6.2 and 4.8 kb, respectively).
