I recently installed a thermostat from Nest — a start-up founded by Tony Fadell, one of the creators of the iPod and iPhone at Apple — that is designed to learn heating preferences automatically over time so it does not have to be programmed.
The difference is that the Nest is smart – it learns your heating patterns, turns off the central heating when not needed and can work out how long it will take to heat your home to the desired temperature given the weather and the specifics of your house or flat.
It automatically learns your heating schedule over the next week – you can also manually schedule temperatures using the app or on the thermostat directly.
The bulb can also tie into the Nest thermostat, a so-called smart device from Apple alumni who helped develop the iPod, that learns consumer heating and cooling patterns and adjusts to them automatically.
And once you've learned how heating egg yolks to 160 degrees unfolds the eggs' proteins to form a moisture-trapping network (thus holding tiny droplets of melted butter suspended in emulsion), you'll never forget how to produce a good hollandaise sauce.
