Mitra describes this learning journey for children as "an intelligent adventure driven by big questions". "It's not about making learning happen, but letting learning happen... we've lost sight of wondrous questions". This technique of asking powerful questions and then stepping aside to see how children respond releases the expectation of a predetermined outcome.
His idea simply is to "let learning happen," to develop self-organizing learning systems to take place where the teacher asks the right question but only the student, in collaboration with other students, finds the answer or answers.
He believes children can learn from one another, and the role of the teacher should be to ask the big questions, step back and admire, and let learning happen through the use of the Internet and self-directed learning.
As an educator and founder of a nonprofit education institute, I believe, as does recent TED Prize winner, educator Sugata Mitra, that we are better off creating conditions to "let learning happen" rather than creating rigid structures that favor rote learning, teaching to tests, or standardized instruction.
