Based on their metric called rumor centrality, they constructed a machine-learning estimator that finds the source exactly or within a few hops in networks.

However, in an earlier study (Forster-Heinzer 2016), it was found that the class level only accounts for 3% of the variance of learning motivation; therefore, a sandwich estimator was used (Muthén and Asparouhov 2011).
