LONDON — Three months after its giant oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, a chastened BP outlined a new strategy on Tuesday to revamp operations and practices around the world and turn it into a leaner operator under a new leader.
The Department of Telecommunications and TRAI, the regulator, want to lean on operators to buy more of their kit from local manufacturers.
Even in lean times operators have to pay fixed fees, along with taxes and shady incentives to officials and local elders.
Nobody more so than Chief Executive Ivan Glasenberg, a lean publicity-shy operator whose sport is race-walking.
The past was maybe as alive in her mind as were other cultures, other languages, politics, human foibles; the range of her reference so rich and even exotic that switchboard operators lean into their boards like milkmaids leaning into their cows; or a friend comes to the door, "Her black hair... up in tin rollers, like a kabuki headdress".
While rebate shops often pay a higher fee for a track's simulcast signal, they have far less overhead because they need only a small office, a computer system, telephones and a lean staff of operators and technicians.
In contrast, quality and lean programmes actively encourage operators to acts of intervention and personal agency in the improvement of production outcomes.
But in Toyota's imagining, the i-ROAD would provide a motorcyclelike riding experience for its operator, who would lean right or left to steer the vehicle.
"I know the conventional wisdom is that only small and lean businesses are the flexible operators," says Larcombe.
In order to function effectively in the lean manufacturing environment, the shop-floor operator needs to know more about customer needs, equipment maintenance and reliability and the supply chain; in general he needs to know more about the business operation.
That this is a real issue is apparent from considering the way that quality and lean manufacturing systems emphasise empowerment of operators.
