In 2001, the British Medical Journal reported that the University Medical Centre in Leiden, Netherlands, the nation's leading facility for premature infants, "has decided in principle to stop the active intensive treatment of babies born before 25 weeks gestation because of research showing poor prognosis".
"This is a world leading facility," he said.
"The attraction (for foreign researchers) is that this is the world center for research on bottom quarks and the leading facility on the intensity frontier," Browder says, "and the 600 of us think that this will be the way to discover new physics beyond the standard model".
With Wendelstein 7-X in Greifswald, Germany also hosts a leading facility in the research of fusion power.
"We are in the process of interviewing candidates," he said, "all of whom come from leading medical facilities and none of whom is currently affiliated with the N.F.L. or an N.F.L. team".
The onset of recession in the 1990s brought on in large part by considerably reduced post-Cold War military spending shut down many of the leading aerospace facilities, causing severe unemployment and disruption in long-established blue-collar communities.
