In H. walsbyi, in order to obtain good images of the S-layer surface structure, higher resolution experiments on a few nanometer scale are needed; nevertheless, in Fig. 4 a fairly regular corrugation with a period of 16 20 nm can be measured across the whole cell surface, in good agreement with the value reported in literature for the lattice constant of the square microorganism S-layer [20].
