In brief, disks containing 30 µg of cefotaxime, ceftazidime or cefepime and disks containing a combination of each of these drugs with 10 µg clavulanic acid (Bio-Rad, Nazareth Eke, Belgium) were placed independently on a 0.5 McFarland opacity lawn culture of the tested isolate on a ISO Sensitest® Agar plate and incubated for 18 24 h at 37°C.
After 1 hr, less than 5% of animals were found outside the bacterial lawn for all strains tested; these animals were not counted.
The virulence of all 98 isolates (one isolate forming a thick bacterial lawn was excluded) was tested in triplicate, using a C. elegans host model, with the strains NCTC8325 and M92 representing positive and negative reference strains, respectively [ 13].

Between 25 and 30 C. elegans worms were transferred from a lawn of Escherichia coli OP50 to a lawn of the bacterium to be tested, incubated at 25°C, and examined at 24-h intervals with a stereomicroscope (Leica MS5) for viability.
