BEHIND THE NEWS North Korea went ahead with the launch in defiance of world opinion, which saw it as a none too plausibly disguised test of a ballistic missile meant to deliver a nuclear weapon.
The US and others believe that the failed launch, in defiance of international pressure, was a covert military exercise as the rocket used– the Taepodong-2 – is equally capable of carrying warheads.
