FB data surrogation markedly decreases the tail of the distribution, i.e. spike shuffling destroys the largest avalanches.
When the data were surrogated by shuffling inter-spike intervals for each neuron, the distribution tails were substantially shortened for all states, experimental conditions and brain areas compared, reflecting the destruction of the largest avalanches (Fig. 3a; see also Fig. S3).
Without additional survival gear, 50% of the avalanche victims that are buried in a large avalanche suffocate within 20 minutes".
Dramatic glacier collapses like this are exceedingly rare – the only known ice avalanche of comparable size was the 2002 Kolka glacier event in the Caucasus mountains – and yet, just two months later on 21 September, a neighbouring Tibetan glacier also imploded, generating a similarly large avalanche deposit, but thankfully no casualties this time.
In contrast, no significant correlations were found between monthly temperature variations and years with large avalanche activity on the slope.
Hence, P ( n ) ∼ q 1 e 1 λ 1 2 n and for larger avalanche sizes we have the leading eigenvalue dominating thus giving the exponential cutoff observed.
Superposed Epoch Analysis indicated that total monthly precipitation during the three snowiest months from May to October of 1971, 1995 and 1998 (years for which climatic data exists for validation) was significantly greater than for years without large avalanche activity.
Such a nontrivial cascade effect accounts for a significant fraction of the avalanche for countries with relatively large avalanche sizes.
For example, Spain has a small avalanche size (A = 0) compared with its GDP (997 billion US dollars) whereas the Republic of South Africa (RSA) has a much larger avalanche size (A = 8) for its GDP (199 billion US dollars).
Reflecting this, developed countries such as the United States, Germany, Japan, China, and France exhibited considerably larger avalanche sizes in the GSN than in the GMN, which dominantly accounted for the increased sum of overall avalanche sizes (Figs. 9A, 9B, and 10A).
