However, due to limitations in sample availability (precluding the study datasets with counts in the hundreds-to-thousands of samples), a two-way approach to pathway analysis was followed based on mining both large scale databases and highly curated knowledge bases –with all interactions taken from actual experimental data – implemented within the causal network philosophy [ 29, 30].
