The results indicated that while small scale BMPs are effective in all regions of the country in managing small events, large rain events are much more difficult to manage as compared to Portland.
New Haven engineers helped select these locations in Newhallville based on their upstream position in the sewer system, which allows for monitoring and may help reduce peak flows during large rain events that contribute to flooding downstream.
The Pankey Branch pumping system, on the east side of town, was built to handle flooding from the Saline River only, and has serious complex watershed technical problems, causing continual water backup within the levee during large rain events.
The Port Angeles facility was designed to process up to 40,000 mg/L total suspended solids (roughly 20,000 30,000 NTU, says Randle), but it remains to be seen how it will handle larger "sediment slugs" that will arise as further sections of the remaining dam are removed or with large rain events.
"This is a potentially heavy rain event for a large part of the state," he said.
(iii) The smaller and larger rain events tend to be transport limited and source limited, respectively.
"We've had larger rain events, but the wind is expected to stay strong for 48 hours, and that's a bigger concern," he said.
Future climate projections under high CO2 emission scenarios indicate that more frequent droughts lasting 1 2 months throughout most of the Northeastern U.S., as well as 3 6 months in localized areas in the Northeastern U.S., will be punctuated among larger rain events (Hayhoe et al. 2007; Wake et al. 2014).
The soil moisture below the soil-inhabiting crust was almost always close to zero from October through April, and only larger rain events, as on October 17, 2005 (5.4 mm) and January 26, 2006 (3.2 mm) led to a short-term increase in soil moisture.
